Personal Accomplishments – In Spite of Epilepsy

This month we want to highlight that having epilepsy does not necessarily mean that the person can not be productive and live a normal although difficult and painful life at times. Of course there are many people that have epilepsy and other co-morbidity illnesses which would prevent them from attaining certain goals or living independently. However the stigma and discrimination applies to all of them, the successful ones as well as those less fortunate.

Here are a few names of famous people that have or have had epilepsy. People with this disease are found in all facets of life. You have actors, writers, musicians, politicians, athletes, and others. Can you recognize some of these names?

Bud Abottt
Danny Glover
Ward Bond
Lenin
Neil Abercrombie
John Roberts
Prince
George Gershwin
Florence Delorez Griffith Joyner
Dostoyevsky
Tchaikovsky
Jean Clemens (daughter of Mark Twain)

And reportedly:

Socrates
Julius Caesar
Edgar Allan Poe.

The complete list would fill many pages, so only a few are mentioned.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? Simple, there are many people throughout the world that equate epilepsy with mental retardation, demonic possession, stupidity, craziness and more.

WE MUST CHANGE THIS PERCEPTION THAT HURTS AND DESTROYS SO MANY PEOPLE.

Update on the Dr. Alfonsina Q. Davies Endowed Chair for Epilepsy at UCLA.

The oil painting of our daughter which you see on the left was a commissioned work from Del Parson, a well known artist. It will hang at UCLA in a place of honor in a new wing of the Neurosurgery Department’s International Educational Facility. It will represent our daughter’s desire to help millions of people, for had she lived she would be doing the work we are doing today on her behalf.

The selection committee has made a decision to fill the Dr. Alfonsina Q. Davies Endowed Chair. Approval must be made at several levels within the University. We hope to be able to announce the candidate’s name shortly.

CVS CAREMARK – AN UPDATE

We recently reported that CVS Caremark Pharmacies is developing a plan to provide needed prescription medications for patients with an emergency. The plan, as originally described changed. Because of privacy policies they will not be able to take credit cards over the telephone, but they will supply a two or three day emergency prescription at minimal cost. The program is called a “Bridge Prescription”.

Thank you CVS Caremark for helping those in need. Especially those with Epilepsy!
